Supporting 67 million people who rely on the grid.

Across the country, electricity demand is rising rapidly – from data centers and AI to electrified vehicles, heating, and industry. At the same time, older power plants are retiring faster than new projects can come online.

This transition creates challenges for the grid and it is raising important questions such as:

  • How will the system continue to support reliability?
  • What does this mean for consumers?
  • How are we adapting to meet these challenges?

Working together with our states and industry stakeholders, PJM is focused on building thoughtful solutions for the future.

Keeping the Power On

PJM Interconnection is the largest grid operator in the United States. The regional transmission organization doesn’t generate electricity or make a profit. Its job is to make sure the system works safely and reliably, coordinating power for 67 million people in 13 states and D.C.

What PJM does is like air traffic control for the grid – highly technical, constantly moving and invisible when it’s working. In combination, this represents the functioning of an extraordinary, competition-driven machine that produces reliable electricity at competitive costs for 20 percent of the country.

PJM coordinates over 1,000 power sources across more than 88,000 miles of transmission. It’s a job that demands technical precision and constant coordination to make sure this massive system works for residents and businesses today and into the future.

PJM is re-imagining how new resources connect to the grid because demand isn’t slowing down.

Taking On the Challenges of Tomorrow

The grid is facing historic demand driven by data centers, AI, electrification, and economic growth. PJM is responding to how new energy projects connect to the grid.

New power online faster is critical to meeting today’s rising demand.

PJM is successfully processing over 200 GW of generation projects as a part of its reform efforts to bring power to the grid faster.

The grid needs reliable, flexible electricity sources now.

PJM launched a Reliability Resource Initiative, which is fast-tracking 11 GW of high-impact, ready-to-build projects.

System reforms prioritize progress over process.

These changes can help bring new power sources online faster.

Smarter tools mean faster timelines and more reliable power.

PJM is working to integrate AI and smart tools to streamline connections and reduce delays.

These changes are already helping to bring new power sources online faster.

Why this matters

Electricity is essential. It powers hospitals, homes, businesses and public safety – it powers our lives.

It is PJM’s job to get it right, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That’s why PJM is taking action to share facts, provide context and help people understand what’s happening with their electric grid.
